By now, i have conquered more than 15 peaks of Karnataka and ready for my first adventure with the Great Himalayas!
These treks have shown me what mother nature offers us! every trek has been challenging and different in its own way!
Some treks are short but tiring, some are lengthy and scary! above all, reaching peak of a mountain and experiencing chill wind is a different experience all together.
From being Debutant trekker in Jan 2009 - Kodachadri Trek to Meruthi Parvatha in 2015 Jan, i have seen first time trekkers going through a lot of difficulties before/during treks.
So, i though of noting down a few inputs for the First timers.
Start walking, Exercising for a couple of hours at least a week before the trek.
A good pair of shoes is a must. i have done a couple of treks with Sparx sandals and injured leg badly. so always wear proper shoes. Quechua offers many shoes Forclaz 50, Forclaz 100, Forclaz 500.. buy one based on the necessity.
A Regular sized Backpack with good Back and support should do. Quechua and Wildcraft are the best options.
Never wear Jeans on a trek, as you get sweat, Jeans will rub against your skin and rashes happen. Wear comfortable shorts, Track pants with enough space for air movement.
Carry enough water. keep you hydrated! eat lots of Musambi, Oranges during trek. these fruits keeps you away from getting cramps.
Avoid breathing through mouth. Breathing through mouth tires you a lot. instead keep breathing from nostrils, you will feel the difference as you climb.
Use a walking stick. its an added grip while you climb/descend.
Start early. starting early avoids trekking under hot sun for a longer time. give enough breaks.
Always have an experienced trekker at the sweeping end. when in doubt about the path, wait for the whole team.
Never venture into forests alone.
If you start a campfire, make sure it doesn't spread. clean the place before you leave.
don't throw plastic bottles, covers during a trek.
Bring back only good memories with you, Don't spoil the mother nature!!
Expect More, Prepare for the Worst! Until you are not on the summit, you are not There!!
